ACT FOR CLIMATE - REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS FROM BUILDINGS

According to the European Commission, buildings account for 36% of carbon emissions in the EU.
Announced at MIPIM 2022, the LCBI (Low Carbon Building Initiative) label is the first exclusively European label, based on a harmonized european method, designed to help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings over their entire life cycle.
Currently available in 8 European countries (France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands), it covers the main asset classes (starting with offices, hotels and residential), and applies to new buildings.
Bureau Veritas France has been a member of the European Low Carbon Building Initiative since 2022. Our position as a trusted third party means we are totally independent of engineering firms and technology suppliers.

ANALYSE THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF YOUR BUILDINGS OVER THEIR ENTIRE LIFECYCLE

Based on key European standards and benchmarks (EN15978, EN15804, the Taxonomy), the LCBI methodology proposes to harmonize the practice of life cycle assessment across Europe by using an indicator that is exclusively representative of CO2 emissions (kgCO2eq/m2), compatible with local regulations.

Our Bureau Veritas experts will work with you using the LCBI methodology to help you qualify for the label.

A 3-CRITERIA METHODOLOGY

Considering the entire life cycle, the LCBI label is a matrix method based on the following 3 elements :

  • embodied carbon

(emissions linked to the building components) measured in kgCO2e/m² over 50 years

  • operational carbon

(linked to energy consumption and sources) measured in kgCO2e/m²/year

  • biogenic carbon storage

in the building measured in kgCO2e/m².

These 3 elements are analyzed according to 2 criteria : carbon performance and data completeness. The 3 levels of the label - Standard, Performance, Excellent - are a combination of these elements.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS

  • For project owners, it functions as a low-carbon design tool, and a means to highlight exemplary low-carbon buildings.
  • For investors, LCBI provides access to uniform and reliable data on the whole life-cycle carbon footprint of buildings, serving as reliable indicator for investment
  • The LCBI methodology sets a clear path for building owners and helps them to make progress in measuring the carbon footprint of their buildings over their entire lifecycle.
